Stocks are broken up between foreign and domestic. Both categories are public offerings of businesses. One will invest in these if they are expected to rise in value. Usually because the business is producing more profit.
Mutual Funds
Mutual funds are a large group of stocks put together to invest in. People will invest in groups to minimize the risk. This way if one stock goes down and another goes up it will hopefully even out.
Foreign Stocks
Foreign stocks are usually used to make a portfolio diverse. Examples of these would be Toshiba, Sony and, Nintendo. These are good reputable companies that have many US shareholders.
Commodities
Investing in commodities is purchasing in a physical commodity like gold, silver, copper, corn, hogs, cattle, orange juice, oil, natural gas..... Some will argue that it is not usually a good investment. Again, it does depend on your personal situation.
Futures Market
The futures market is similar to a stock exchange. However, commodities can be traded here for a profit or loss.
Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's)
Many people like ETF’s due to the fact that they are low cost, are tax efficient and are similar to the stock market. They are funds that are traded on a stock market and they usually hold commodities from stock or bonds.
Most households in the United State will use a financial advisor and invest in mutual funds or 401k’s or, some type of stock holdings. Most people will not pass this level of investing. This is unfortunate because many people do not understand and fully know what is being done with their money. If they did there would be many angry people in the world. These are very basic descriptions and hopefully they will help you find some good investments for you. All of them can be great opportunities to make money. However, it will be the investors knowledge and situation that will ultimately make them the most money. Knowledge and understanding are the most important tributes to have when investing. The key is to educate yourself. You will be handling money for the rest of your life and I cannot stress the importance of understanding how money works.
