If you take a little time to learn the basics of a certain category of investing you will begin to understand how other categories of investing work.  Many people have no idea what tax lien investing is.  Understanding tax lien investing will help you understand how money works and flows throughout the economy.

What are Tax Liens?

Many governments make us pay taxes.  The taxes pay for our roads, schools, social programs and also the interest on the government’s loans.  If there is any type of business exchange there is usually taxes that someone has to pay.  Even owning property like land, homes and cars will lead to owing taxes to the governments.

Some Can’t Pay Up

Sometimes people default or cannot pay their taxes.  When a person is unable to pay their taxes then the government steps in and creates a lien against that person’s property.  This is collateral to guarantee that the government will get their money that the person owes them.

The Government Values Cash Today

The government knows that money today is worth more than money in the future, so they will actually sell these liens off to private investors who want to hold the lien to make a future profit.  The government likes this because they do not want the lien; they want the money so they can pay their bills.

More Detail

Tax liens are actual liens against properties for people who have not or cannot pay their taxes. There are tons of people that have become late on their taxes. So the government will put up liens against their real estate to hold until they pay their taxes. The government then actually sells these liens to investors and when the person that is late on their taxes pays up they pay the investor. If they decide to sell their house the investor gets the first position on the home right after the bank. This is a great way to invest because the government backs it.

Tax lien investing is a great way of investing. It has and will continue to help many people that are seeking opportunities to make a profit. The government backs it up and in today’s economy there are tons of tax liens. The good thing is that it looks like there are going to be more to come. In every economic downturn the flow of money slows, people loose their jobs and cannot pay their bills. If an investor is positioned correctly they can make a ton of money through this strategy.
